Travel around Yakushima

We canceled our plan to go to Shiratani because of the rain, and instead went around Yakushima by car.

At first, we went to the Yakusugiland.

You can get information about how the view of this island was made. If they had left all the yakusugi (Japanese cedar) trees as they were, without cutting them down, the view would be really different. The island’s history of tree cutting and its high-humidity environment had made this great view.

The Sennensugi cedars were 1000 years old.

They are called “yakusugi” when they are over at least 1000 years old. They are called “kosugi” (“small” or “child” cedar) until they reach that age.

The telephone box was in the shape of a yakusugi.

The Kigensugi cedar is 3000 years old. You can see it very near at hand.

Senpironotaki (a waterfall) looked as though water overflowed every rock surface. We saw a yakuzaru (a monkey) there.
